Every few years a new virus raises its ugly head, this is not new…this will never change no matter what we do …, when COVID goes away, there will be another one on its way. I’m sorry about that, but it’s called life. What has changed is the way our society reacts to these things, instead of common sense, we have media-fuelled panic, endless drama and misinformation. Fear is everywhere and seriously destroying lives, destroying our free society as we become masked robots marching aimlessly to the tunes of misinformation.

As a public health doctor, I have to speak up…

Yesterday was Nelson Mandela Day….I salute and thank you for your contribution to this world and my life.

Madiba had a big influence on my life. I’m South African so he was not a distant figure in some faraway world…he was someone I grew up in the news on a regular basis. I eventually witnessed his release in 1994…and with that his incredibly positive influence on all South Africans, and the world.

He was a man who brought us all together and gave us hope, we saw ourselves as a miraculous rainbow nation, we won the world cup rugby (1995)…

and I’m a doctor so theoretically should be better placed to grip this…

Firstly, fake news, doom and gloom, persistent unrelenting bombardment from all quarters about covid19 is exhausting and real. I started off thinking the CDC and WHO would be unquestionably accurate, but sadly they are also riddled with political noise and not always able to say things as they are. So when they say the virus doesn’t come from the Wuhan lab and Prof. Luc Montagnier says it does, who does one believe? Without accurate facts, we are unable to form solid opinions and oscillate with increasingly dramatic…

From rags to riches …..still in my dreams

I got my first payout from Medium this month, so chuffed…I made $0.01…I’m a doctor, not a writer but got into informal writing a few years back as I toiled with the idea of writing a children’s book for my dear mama…I did it, she loved it and I remain hooked on writing ever since…children’s stories are my thing, I love kids, have three of my own and believe writing for them is an amazing opportunity to get across some powerful, positive life messages.

As a clinical doctor, I spend my time…

The importance of a healthy daily routine

Seeing people walk around the pyjamas, unwashed and blurry-eyed early afternoon doesn’t have many excuses….a hangover, being sick, long haul travel, night shifts …but quarantine is not one of them!

It’s easy to sink into a meaningless rut, lost in time, no idea what day it is, we forget the time, the days become jumbled …Groundhog Day (fun movie if you have the time). Our most valuable asset on this earth is TIME …but only if we use it right. Set yourself small goals and establish a routine …be conscious of time.

My…

Before coronavirus came along….

I typed this ridiculous title up a few months ago …never got beyond the title…I soon realised after sitting back and pondering a brief moment that I would probably need to remove my entire brain. It would make me so happy that I would not need to write about it, I would just enjoy eternal bliss, as fresh air blew between my ears….I wouldn’t have to focus on keeping floods of thoughts from devilishly dancing through my mind….it should all be zen and happy, peaceful …a great place to be.

A few months ago we did…

Cash provides an ideal transport medium for bacteria and viruses of all sorts….and yes that means Coronavirus as well. There have been a number of articles on the subject recently, China sterilising cash, etc…The whole subject of coins has long been on my irritation list …well before coronavirus, but it’s a good time to discuss it.

Coins are so inconvenient …..perhaps a funny reminder that we are still a fairly dumb species.

  • They weigh your pockets down, burst your wallets, …rattle and shake as you walk…fall out when you sit or lie down…
  • As a toddler, my eldest son swallowed…

Over the past few weeks we have been bombarded with all sorts of stories, some totally off the wall, alarmist and instilling panic and nothing positive. One thing that is becoming increasingly clear to all of us is the value in flattening the curve …there are a number of good videos explaining the value of this…it might not be perfect, but it does afford our health systems time to manage the numbers better, develop successful treatment regimes and eventually produce a vaccine (2021).

How can we support this process?

  1. Stay informed — Only use reliable sources of information WHO, CDC…

A colleague mentioned changing the name of the common Influenza viruses to something more dramatic, like Vejaka virus might stop this present frenzy going on worldwide…..maybe the press will do that when Corona fades into history. We all need to take a step back and get some sensible insight into what's happening. Hard to do when we are being bombarded by bad news all day long….border closures, flights cancelled, quarantines etc…

Corona is new and is hitting us all hard, yes…me too …but how can we make things better? …

…fuelled by misinformation…..

Death by Bunda, ….Ebola, Hanta, Zika…my goodness our evolution into a highly communicative species is exciting, but it is biting us in the butts big time. We access the latest news at all times, super-connected …over stimulated, exhausted….misinformed, confused, it is not healthy, we know it, it’s obvious, but it is our new world, and it is this that kills us….and ravages the economy (unless you sell masks or newspapers!)

Ever since the beginning of time, there have been viruses, they have never stopped evolving and challenging the wellbeing of all creatures on this planet….and they never…
